trade seems to level up as long as you sell an item for profit so its purely a numbers game go buy items for cheap like flax,grapes, olives and grain and sell in bulk. Just go from city to city winning tournaments while buying best priced items and selling the ones that give you profit, easy peasy.

You need to start the game with a bow, that's for sure. For the personal trading issue: if you buy an item, save, exit the game, load your save and sell that item, it won't count as trading. The only way to increase the trade skill is if you personally buy something, then you go sell it for a higher price. There is no other method to raise the trade skill. Workshops and caravans will not raise the skill. Selling battle loot or tournament prizes will not raise the skill either. Only things you pay for, and only if sold for a profit.

It is much faster to increase engineering through building siege engines. Trebuchets seem to give the most XP (I'm not certain about that, but it felt that way to me). Tactics can be leveled up slowly through battle by issuing an order (simple F1-F3 or F6 would suffice) at least once.
